150 years of education at Matakana School
The 150th Anniversary of Matakana School was in 2012 and to celebrate this occasion on the 10th March 2012 a special event was held.
This celebration was a wonderful opportunity for old friends to meet and to make new ones. Likewise it was a chance for former staff to visit and re-connect with their colleagues. We had a great turnout of past staff and pupils.
We displayed photos and memorabilia on the day. We wanted to celebrate and showcase the history of our school, and this was achieved with thanks to those that spent many hours compiling and preparing the displays.
A "time capsule" was buried under our newly created PTA Friendship Garden, with the youngest pupil at the time Daniel Barnett being tasked to return in 50 years at the 200th Anniversary to open it. It was carefully filled with items that may well be obsolete in 50 years time.
The current students showcased their talents to the guests and took pleasure showing them around the school and sharing our special celebration cake.
A commemorative plaque is on display in the office.
