Community Hall
The Matakana School community hall was built in 1990 and is utilised by students and staff for physical activity sessions, assemblies, performing art practice and performances and many other activities and functions. The Hall houses a fully equipped kitchen, technical room and is used by our community for health related activities and charitable fundraisers. To book our school hall, contact the school office on 422 7309 or office@matakana.school.nz.
We are also pleased to have on our grounds one of the very first Matakana School classrooms built in the early 1900’s. We call this our “Old Hall” and our After School Care is housed here.
Library/Information Centre
Our Library is being converted into a state of the art Library/Information Centre in 2012/2013. More information to follow.
Performing Arts Room
We are fortunate enough to have a room dedicated to music, singing, drama and dance at Matakana School which is utilised by teachers, students and external tutors (e.g guitar, singing).
All musical instruments are stored in this room including our Piano and a sound system is also available. Students have an allocated period during the week for music and singing lessons. This room is also utilised by Kapa Haka and Drama student.
Playground
Matakana School’s adventure playgrounds are a real treat for our students! Our Year 0 to 3 children enjoy the slides, monkey bars and climbing structures and get to dig and play in our large sandpit. Our sandpit treasure chest houses many diggers, spades and buckets to let imaginations run wild!
Year 4-6 have their own separate ‘senior’ playground with a climbing wall, mini flying fox, climbing structures and monkey bars. With a beautiful rural outlook either side and our sports field close by, there’s the opportunity to get lots of physical activity during morning tea and lunch times.
Throughout the school there are painted “four squares”, hopscotches and our junior syndicate have their very own basketball hoops in our quad area.
Sports Field
In 2012 our sports field was re-drained and students can now enjoy the fields daily and even after a very wet wintery day! Soccer, rugby, tag and much more plus we use our fields for Cross Country, Pet Day and other sporting and events. Check out the view!
Running Track
Thanks past parents/caregivers, community and Matakana School teachers and staff for your commitment to our fundraisers! We now have our very own running track around the perimeter of our sports field. A morning run to start the day – perfect! In 2013 our first station will be added to the running track - all thanks to our dedicated Omaha Classic Run/Walk fundraising parent committee.
Basketball/Netball Courts
Our courts are utilised by students for netball practice and we have basketball hoops installed on these courts as well. In the morning you can catch junior students playing soccer, practising hockey and these courts are also used for other sporting activities.
Quad
Busy and the hub of our school is what we would call our quad area! Students eat lunch, sit under our 100 year old Pohutakawa tree, play four square, jump rope, parent helpers use this area for group reading and in late October this area comes alive at our annual Gala day.
Sports Shed
Our sports shed is open to all students every morning tea and lunch time and has an array of equipment including our Sports Trolley which is also utilised during classroom time.
Year 6 students are Sports Shed monitors and ensure that all items are stored correctly.
Pool
Solar heated pool.
