Our School Garden is a place of creativity and learning for them. The children learn all about the art and skill of gardening, how their food is grown and the sense of achievement in harvesting the fruits of their labour.
Originally founded with a fabulous grant from the World Wildlife Fund ‘Environmental Education Action Fund’, the school garden has continued to grow in size, resources and capacity with:
• Fantastic local support from Tumbleweed Coastal Plants in Matakana who support and subsidise our endeavours
• Generous sponsorship from Daltons NZ for past and future requirements of potting mix and compost
• Grants from the Education Environment Funding office of the former Rodney District Council
Thanks to all this support the Matakana School Garden has extensive raised garden beds, its own greenhouse, a modern composting facility, a worm farm, and superb gardening resources.
Currently focussed on Years 3 and 4 students, the gardening program takes the children through an annual calendar of garden planting, upkeep and harvesting. There are also annual competitions open to the entire student body such as the “Spud in a Bucket” competition and the Giant Pumpkin Growing Competition.
Our Matakana School Garden Club puts the green in Magic.
